Major Welding Processes
Arc Welding - MIG, TIG, Plasma Arc, Submerged Arc Welding processes are all fusion welding processes that involve a welding torch that provide the energy input to the parts being welded. These processes are used in high volume applications particulary MIG welding and Submerged Arc. (Manufacturers - Miller,Lincoln, ESAB, Hobart and more)
Resistance Welding - Spot and Seam resistance welding is utilized in high volume automotive applications. These processes require passage of a welding current and application of force on the parts to be welded. Spot welding is extremely cost effective on a per weld basis (some cars use as many as 3000 welds). (Manufacturers - several custom manufacturers)
Laser Welding - A welding technology that emerged in the 90's with the development of laser sources such as CO2 and Nd:YAG. Laser welding in principle is similar to arc welding from application of external energy standpoint and typically requires a filler metal. Utilized to a large extent in sheet welding for automotive applications. Auto body welding has moved to laser welding in Europe and North America is beginning to adopt as well. (Manufacturers : Trumpf, Rofin-Sinar, Nuvonyx and more)
Ultrasonic Welding - A welding technology that is primarily used in plastics and for micro joining. Application of vibration or ultrasonic energy to join parts is used in high volume applications. For metals, they could be suitable for typcially non-weldable metals such as copper and dissimilar metals. Ultrasonic welding is a solid state welding process and hence is different from Arc, Resistance or Laser welding. (Manufacturers - Branson, Amtech and more)
Friction Welding - Another solid state welding process that requires one of the parts to rotate or move to create the friction energy required. Suited for tubular components and is used to small extent by high volume manufacturers. (Manufacturers - Thompson, KUKA, MTI and more)
